I know I'm leaving off some classics- (Watchmen, Preacher, Sin City, etc.) but those titles get plenty of play as it is.

Good choices!
One I have always held in high regard was the Meltdown series (Wolvie and Havok) - John J. Muth and Kent Williams. Not sure how much "play" that one gets...
Oh, also Elektra Assasin - Bill Sienkiewicz

Let's play "Spot the child of the 80's"!

Yeah!

Meltdown was one of the first graphic novels I ever picked up. It had a visual style that was in direct contrast to everything else out on the racks, very painterly and somewhat abstracted. I still vividly remember some of those images, and it's been almost 15 years since I've seen it.

Sienkiwicz always impressed me as well, though there's almost something too rich about his work- every panel feels like a separate piece of art and I have a hard time following the flow of things because I get stuck gaping at the work.

Speaking of Darrow, I'm also a fan of his oversized Big Guy, 2 issue series. It was pretty dang cool, though the saturday morning cartoon kinda botched it. Funny, but I just read Hard Boiled again, last week. Indeed, good stuff.

I'm also a big fan of Hellboy, but Mignola is not so obscure anymore. Wasn't that long ago, you'd say "Hellboy" and everyone would go, "Whoboy?".
