{ AttaboyFloating Submerged published by Last Gasp }
I've been a fan of Attaboy's hallucinatory character designs since first laying eyes on them, so it's just natural that I completely dig this collection of some of his finest paintings and illustrations served up in book-bound postcard form. If you're not familiar with the drippy trippy landscapes and guffaw-inducing creatures that populate Attaboy's imagination, Floating Submerged is a great intro to the mind behind YumFactory.
The pieces are slickly reproduced in bright and delicious candy-coated colors, and I can't stress how important that is to appreciating Attaboy's work. His use of a wild and vivid palette and manipulation of odd strokes, shapes and lines not only hold the eye, but allow him to engage in a unique form of cartoon-bent abstract expressionism, from which a whole passel of mutated critters emerge.
The book includes 32 postcard reproductions, and though I've yet to be able to bring myself to actually write on one and drop it in the mail, I have taken two of them out, framed them, and hung them next to my desk at work. Now mescaline-esque Looney Tunes daydreams are only a glance away....
