{ Grave of the Fireflies }
If you havent yet viewed this 1988 film you are missing a true classic. Isao Takahata creates visual poetry in this realistic drama of two children struggling to survive as they lose contact with their mother while their village is constantly being bombed during World War II. The youngsters Seita and sister Setsuko eventually find an aunt to take them in, but after being constantly berated the two decide to flea. This somber tale is like no other anime film and demonstrates the potential of anime as a serious art-form. This film is based off Nosaka Akiyuki's semi-autobiographical novel and produced by Studio Ghibli head Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Monoke, My Neighbor Totoro). Fans of Miyazaki should seek this one out immediately. This is like an "Angela's Ashes" set to animation, do yourself a favor and buy this now!
