{     PUTA Magazine     }

Yes, PUTA is the Spanish word for "whore," but it is also the acronym for "Put Up Truant Art," which is exactly what this theme-based art magazine does. The double meaning comes from the idea that in our world we must all compromise our ideas and their subsequent fruits, so that commercialism may come into play and the work fit in with the common taste. In other words, we have to be art whores. Naughty, naughty indeed. Well, PUTA gives it's contributers, some famous and some not-so-famous-at-all, the freedom to express themselves however they see fit, so long as their efforts in some way tie in with the central theme designated for that issue, and are of course uncompromised. With issue number two, editors Todd Roberts of URB Magazine and photographer Jahmin Assa asked the artists to work with the idea of "soul." The resulting paintings, photography, writing, graphic design, and other works that reside in-between, all show a striking depiction of an art world left very disenchanted with the current state of affairs, hungry for change in their galleries, and bursting with fresh ideas to drop with or without the approval of the contemporary 'scene'. Got that? Understand the ideas and reasons behind the magazine? Okay. Now for the extra-big bonus: Every single page in this bastard is fucking great. Like "I want to tear out the pages and frame each one" great. Like "I'll buy two issues so I can get both sides of the page framed" great. Really. So highly recommended. That said, PUTA is available quarterly in fine shops everywhere, and soon in PUTA's own online store, so get it.
